Three warthogs saved from poachers' snares

February-April 2025
Poaching incidents in urban areas are also increasing

Warthogs are the mascots of Hoedspruit town, and for good reason. We have several individuals and families roaming around town, nibbling on the grassy areas and public gardens. Unfortunately, they have also fallen victim to poachers' snares. With no owners to pay for their rescue, our Snare Rescue Group (Down 2 The Wire- African Wildlife Vets- Wild Wonderful World- Scales Conservation Fund - Blue Sky Society) pays for the veterinary costs to save these animals.

The Wildscapes Veterinary team managed to save three town warthogs in Hoedspruit and neighbouring Kampersrus from snares around their neck, snout and legs. One leg snare was removed with great difficulty, as it had cut in the tissue up to the bone. Another animal had a snare around its snout, which was successfully removed. These are especially cruel, as animals are unable to eat and starve to a painful, slow death.
