Young male lion collared and snare sweep

November 2023
A snare-infested area adjoining Kruger becomes part of carnivore conservation programme

Wild Wonderful World funded the 1.5 helicopter hours needed to collar a male lion for EWT carnivores programme on Letaba Ranch. The lion was darted from the air and successfully collared. The surrounding area was also checked for snares and an abandoned poachers camp was found. The area is notorious for illegal activities like snare poaching and illegal gold mining. This is a clear case of not only Protected Areas needing conservation help, but the surrounding areas as well. We support the EWT carnivore research programme to get a better understanding of why animals may choose to move outside of the protection of the neighbouring Kruger National Park, into this snare-ridden ranch, where they are breaching the fence and how we can develop a plan to stop snaring in the area all-together.
