Spotted hyena rescued from snare

November 2023
A successful rescue, but long recovery for this female

Wild Wonderful World contributed to a badly snared female spotted hyena found on Thornybush Game Reserve (first photo). The snare injury was so bad, she was kept in a temporary holding facility on Thornybush to recover. She even had a couch as a bed inside the stable of the boma (second photo). She was immobilised one last time for a final treatment and release back into the reserve (third photo). The wound had healed extremely well but there was irreparable muscle damage to the neck which meant that she would always have a strange neck stance. Thank you to Thornybush and other NGO partners for sharing the costs.

A month after her release, this hyena was spotted at a call-up for a different snare incident, and she looked to be being very well!
