Rhino's dehorned at Care for Wild

September 2021
Assistance to cover veterinary costs to dehorn rhinos

This September Wild Wonderful World and our donors contributed to the veterinary costs to de-horn both white and black rhino at the Care for Wild Rhino Sanctuary. Care for Wild rehabilitate orphan baby rhino's that have lost their mothers to poachers. The rhino's are lovingly nursed back to health before being released into their high security reserve to give them a chance at life again. This operation was focused on de-horning the bigger orphans that have been released, a project in conjction with teams from SANParks, MTPA and @wildlifevets.com_sa. A sad but necessary evil in the fight to keep these animals alive.

Dehorning is often compared to the trimming of your nails because rhino horn is also made from keratin. Dehorning is a highly controlled and regulated procedure that has proven highly effective at deterring poaching attempts.

After the procedure is complete, the horns are REMOVED from CARE FOR WILD to a secure location, they DO NOT remain on the property.
