Rhino saved from terrible wound

April 2023
The cause is still unknown but full recovery expected. Graphic image warning!

A female white rhino was found with a large wound on her rump on a reserve west of the Kruger National Park. The cause of the injury was unknown and veterinary intervention was needed to check if it was not a result of a gunshot wound. Three weeks after the initial treatment, Dr Chris Smith from African Wildlife Vets went back to the reserve for a follow-up treatment. Wild Wonderful World funded the helicopter time for this intervention. The wound was looking much better! It was cleaned again, maggots removed and a top-up of more antibiotics and pain medication administered. The team also fitted a tracking collar which will enable the MTPA rhino monitor to track her movements and assess her condition.

We are very hopeful that this rhino will make a full recovery!

Yet another instance of successful collaboration between likeminded NGOs, the treatments were funded by: Aspinall Foundation, Wild Wonderful World, Wild Tomorrow Fund and African Wildlife Vets.
