Porcupine Saved From Snare

A first of this species for our snare rescue group

An adult female porcupine was found caught in an old snare on the Siviti Lodge property. The snare was attached to a small tree. Because the porcupine had tried to get loose, the snare had caused a wound on her back. Luckily, because the snare was tied to the tree, the porcupine stayed in place for the vet to dart it with a tranquilliser drug to safely remove the snare from its prickly victim. We expect a full recovery following treatment! Fortunately, porcupine are a species that we see snared the least in our area. The cost of the operation was split between the Snare Rescue Group - a group of likeminded NGO's who are partnering to fund rescues of snared wildlife.

In December 2024, another porcupine was found with a fractured spine, most likely after being hit by a car. Unable to move its back legs, this animal had to be euthanised.
