Hyena desnared during major snare sweep operation

April 2023
100+ snares removed in a day

This hyena was found with a healed, thick cable snare around the neck. Surprisingly, upon removal the vets did not find much tissue damage and the animal was in good condition. This hyena was desnared after a snare sweep operation lead by the Phalaborwa Natural Heritage Foundation removed over 100 snares from a property in a day and found a snare where a hyena broke loose. Another hyena on the property was desnared that evening.

The operation was funded by Wild Wonderful World, Down2TheWire and African Wildlife Vets. Special thanks go out the Wildscapes Veterinary Services for donating their time and fuel expenses for this intervention!
