Elephant calf saved from leg snare

January 2025
A deeply embedded snare removed

An elephant calf was seen with a snare around its left hind limb. Both the calf and the mother had to be immobilised to remove the snare. It was made of cable and had cut very deeply. Despite the seriousness of the wound we expect a full recovery. The operation proceeded smoothly and without complications. Samples for bacterial culture were taken from the snare wound, as a study about antibiotic resistance is currently being done.

The operation was funded by Wild Wonderful World, African Wildlife Vets, Blue Sky Society, Down to the Wire and Captivating Africa.
