The day we arrived on safari at Manyoni reserve in Kwazulu-Natal, poachers had taken the life of a mother rhino, leaving her dependent calve orphaned. Over the past decade, we’ve become aware of the rhino poaching crisis, yet it was surreal to hear that an incident occurred on the reserve while we were on safari. The news hit us in the gut! The next morning, we skipped our safari drive for the rare opportunity to join Michelle on a horn trimming operation on the reserve.

Africa’s safari and wildlife industry is sitting on a knife’s edge. The recent degradation of the Ngorongoro Crater's conservation status by the IUCN and the raging legal battle over the location of the Ritz-Carlton’s Masai Mara Safari Camp are mere symptoms of the much wider issue of prioritization of consumptive needs of humans over the wellbeing of wildlife and ecosystems. We've seen it time and time again. As safari operators, we need to do more than just pay lip service to the increasingly popular conservation narrative. Here's how we do that.

Zambia is often overshadowed by more iconic safari destinations such as Kruger National Park in South Africa, Okavango Delta in Botswana and Mana Pools in Zimbabwe. However, Zambia is home to some truly picturesque national parks and impressive wildlife spectacles. And perhaps most importantly of all, it still offers both authentic and luxurious safari experiences without the crowds! Yet, until very recently, Zambia hasn’t been receiving the attention it deserves as a luxury safari destination. And we're here to change that!
