If we had to pick the most miraculous African place of all, it might well be the Okavango Delta, where the 1,000-milelong Okavango River gives up on its search for an outlet to the sea and seeps life giving into the sands of one of the world’s most uncompromising deserts, creating a vast and mesmerizing oasis. As Frans Lanting wrote in his elegiac book Okavango: Africa’s Last Eden, “The [Delta’s] very existence in the middle of the Kalahari Desert is nothing short of miraculous . . . like a dream.”
Botswana’s wilderness is expansive and—to our scurrying senses—timeless, and the Okavango isn’t it's only dreamy place. Our under-two-week safari takes you to three others, right up near the top of African marvels: the lush and pacific Gomoti Plains, the exemplary Moremi Game Reserve, quite close to another phenomenon of miraculous rarity, Victoria Falls.
A few of the many incredible things you'll see and experience while on this journey.
Day 1: Arrival - Maun, Botswana
Begin your Wetlands and Waterfalls adventure with a low level flight over the Okavango Delta, spotting elephants and wildlife from above. Arrive at the stunning Jacana camp in time for a late afternoon lunch before heading out on your first afternoon/ evening game drive. Located on a beautiful island in the Jao Concession, Jacana is a typical Delta camp. Surrounded by seasonally-inundated floodplains and papyrus swamps, Jacana is built on raised wooden decks to take advantage of the views of the broad channels in front.
Days 2 & 3: Jacana Camp, Okavango Delta
Being a ‘water camp,’ Jacana Camp offers primarily water activities with game drives during the summer months – dependent on water levels and time of year. Water activities include boating, Mokoro's (traditional dug out canoes) and catch and release fishing. Bush walks are also offered. The landscape is ideal for the rare sitatunga and abundant red lechwe, as well as a host of other species. Birdlife is abundant; enthusiasts can spot Pel's fishing-owl and Lesser jacanas, true Okavango specials!
Days 4 - 6: Little Vumbura, Okavango Delta
Crossing East over the delta takes you to your next camp, Little Vumbura. The annually flooded grasslands surrounding Vumbura Plains are locally referred to as 'melapo' and offer superb seasonal viewing of vast array of wildlife. Predators include the African wild dog, several resident prides of lion, as well as leopard, cheetah and African wildcat. Birding is exceptional all year round.
Days 4-6: Little Vumbura's extra/ optional activities
Experience the Delta from new heights on a hot air balloon ride over this rich ecosystem (extra cost) or learn about Botswana's Lion Genetics study and developed a comprehensive understanding of the past and present genetic structure of the lion population centred on Botswana’s Okavango Delta.
Days 7 & 8: Victoria Falls Safari Lodge, Zimbabwe
Today you will continue your safari adventures cross border and head into Zimbabwe. Victoria Falls Safari Club will be your base while you explore Zambezi National Park, the town of Victoria Falls, and the magnificent "smoke that thunders" aka Victoria Falls. For the adrenaline junkies out there, bungee jump over the falls, white water raft the zambezi or swim in Devils Pool or enjoy a more leisurely sunset cruise down the Zambezi.
Day 9: Departure - Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe
Sunrise and breakfast overlooking the waterhole and plains below will mark the end of your safari. You will transfer by road to Victoria Falls International Airport where you can connect with onward flights home.
Optional: Learn about Botswana's Lion Genetics study and developed a comprehensive understanding of the past and present genetic structure of the lion population centred on Botswana’s Okavango Delta.
